How do you clean it up? How do you prevent actors from slipping in it?
That was the next issue we had to think over. My Tech Director had the idea to build an elevated platform that rolled on for "Carrie" and "Tommy" to stand on and be crowned King and Queen. The platform had grates on top and a cistern inside it. It caught the blood beneath her feet and kept it off the stage. "Tommy" had a cue to leave the platform just before "Chris" yells: "Pull the chord, Billy!"
@@seanparker124That's brilliant. Did you find you had to deal with splatter all the same? What formula stage blood did you use? Corn syrup based?
@@HuntingLodgeforRichWeirdos There was a little splatter on the stage, but it wasn't an issue. It's been a while but I recall the TD coming up with a water and corn starch mixture. The corn starch thickened it some and it glowed in the red lights. When Carrie exits, she had another prom dress with blood to change into for the final scene. This scene is so difficult to stage, it always comes out as comical versus frightening. I saw Carrie in original premiere in NY the night before it closed. That alone was scary: the audience was throwing their playbills onto the stage, enraged. That was more frightening than the production. I have since thought it should be attempted in chamber without a chorus, just Carrie and Mother, and perhaps narrative scenes from the Susan Snell character -- as it is written from her point of view -- cutting all this extraneous scene work, or at least minimizing it. I keep looking for a decent production.
I absolutely agree that it's difficult to stage. From the videos I've seen of both the Broadway and off Broadway productions, they chose to fall back on the red lighting rather than something interesting with the blocking itself. I honestly think the German production did it best from the versions of the scene that I've seen- they used the people and special effects effectively without it feeling like too much (as would be so easy to do) or too little (which is what some productions fall into the trap of because they don't know what to do with it)

@@sheismymom It's not nice to critique without merit. Proper criticism in theatre offers opinions with clear examples that support the views. Criticism isn't a blunt statement that's meant to insult. I could have used something harsher than "idiot."

I like that they had a drum beating to represent Margaret’s heartbeat. It made it more clear that she was stopping her heart as opposed to choking her or something. Most productions don’t do that.
I had a great sound designer for this show. He really added a lot of great ideas.

I know that this was a long time ago but it's amazing, the way it has been staged is incredible. I am doing this play and really need help with the "Karen ends things with Joe" scene. My partner and I can't seem to block it and it's for our final grade. Is there any chance you could upload or send it to me? We wouldn't copy it but I am in need of some inspiration!
Imogen Gervasoni I just got your message. I'm at a theatre convention but I will do my best. we kept that scene simple and allowed the vulnerability to happen. Remember you truly love each other. It's the outside that's your obstacle and Joe loses faith.

Stunning. Riveting. Both actresses were brilliant. Karen was surprisingly strong against Martha who was absolutely amazing. Timing was exquisite all the way through, especially the long beat between "Good night" and "Darling." Thank you for posting this. I wish I'd seen the whole performance. Wonderful.

They are not only gifted...they are caring people with an amazing work ethic. Any theatre company and tv/film production company would be lucky to get them. :)
